NFL Draft 09: Welcome to the NFL Matthew Stafford, now stand by for career suicide.

With the first pick in the NFL draft the Lions selected Georgia Bulldogs Quarterback Matthew Stafford. The Lions earned the number 1 pick in the NFL draft by finishing the 08 season with a record of 0-16. The lions as a team and an organization have been horrible since they won their last NFL championship more than 50 years ago. Not that Stafford had a choice what team drafted him unless he pulled a Eli Manning or John Elway by demanding to be traded if the Lions drafted him.

Other than Calvin Johnson and Julian Peterson the cupboard is bare. The Lions offensive Line was terrible last year and they did little to improve it. Julian Peterson is a nice addition to the defense but the lions had to give up Cory Redding to get him. Hopefully Stafford will develop a quick release and Calvin Johnson can get open while he's getting double teamed every play. Otherwise Stafford will end up like the last 3 Quarterbacks the Lions picked in the first round Joey Harrington, Andre Ware and Chuck Long all ended up being huge disappointments.
