John Smoltz's new home in the bullpen will save his career.

He hasn't officially been moved to the bullpen yet but following last nights dreadful 8 earned runs in 4 innings he will be there soon. The Sox just traded one of their bullpen arms for Victor Martinez so the spot is open.

Smoltz hasn't been a full time reliever since 2004 but he should fit in nicely. From 2002-2004 Smoltz was the Braves full time closer and arguably the best in the league. During those three seasons he had 144 saves and a 2.38 era.

The Red Sox picked up Smoltz to be the big game pitcher he has been his whole career. He has the all time lead with 15 victories with an era of 2.65 while having a .789 winning percentage. Having him in the pen this October with his ability to throw 1 or multiple innings will be a nice weapon for Red Sox manager Terry Francona to have at his disposal.

Smoltz has gone to the bullpen once before to extend his career following arm problems, this season he will do it again.
