Don't blame Minaya Mets fans, your season is cursed.
Entering today the New York Mets are 10 games below .500 and 15 games out of first place. This is quite the disappointing season for a team that was supposed to compete for a world series title with a $136 million dollar payroll.
Many Mets fans are quick to want the heads of Mets GM Omar Minaya and manager Jerry Manuel displayed outside of the Mets brand new ballpark Citi Field, that might be an over reaction. The Mets have had an enormous amount of injuries this year that no team could have overcome.
Cleanup hitter and first baseman Carlos Delgado has been out since May 11th with hip surgery.
Lead off hitter and star shortstop Jose Reyes has been sidelined since May 20th with a hamstring injury.
Arguably the Mets best player Carlos Beltran has been injured since June 22nd with a knee injury.
Mets all star 3rd baseman David Wright has been in and out of the lineup most recently he was injured by taking a Matt Cain 94 mph fastball off his dome.
The pitching staff has had John Maine, JJ Putz and Oliver Perez out for most of the season too.
In case you are keeping score the Mets have lost their 4 best everyday players, their 2nd and 4th best starting pitchers and their setup reliever all to injury for most of the year. No team can overcome this, its amazing the Mets are only 10 games under .500. You can attribute that in part to ace Johan Santana who remarkably hasn't been injured this season slipping on a banana peal on his way to the mound.
