Hill is the right choice to lead the 49ers.

Mike Singletary made the official decision to have Shaun Hill the starting Quarterback for the 49ers on Tuesday. This seems to be the obvious choice but the decision had to be more difficult than it seems.

Shaun Hill's competition for the starting Quarterback gig was Alex Smith, the two QB's couldn't be more different.

Alex Smith was the #1 overall pick for the 49ers in 2005. Shaun Hill was an undrafted free agent that was signed by the Minnesota Vikings in 2002. Alex Smith is a physical stud, running the 40 in 4.7, benched 335 pounds and had a 31 inch vertical leap at the NFL combine. Hill took two snaps all of his first year both of them were kneel downs.

The pay scale for the two was also drastically different. Alex Smith's rookie contract was for six years and $49.5 million dollars. Shaun Hill his rookie season made $240,000. In his first 6 seasons Hill made a total of $2.75 million. In Alex Smith's rookie season his pay was $3.5 million he then made $9.35 million his second year.

OK so one guy has a big arm, can run the 40 as fast as some running backs and took Utah to a BCS school while graduating in 3 years and the other guy couldn't even get drafted, so whats the debate?

Well the difference is Hill wins. Smith's record as a starter is 11 wins and 19 losses. A lot of that can be chalked up to a poor 49ers team, but with the same team Hill has gone 7-3. Hill doesn't turn the ball over he's only thrown 9 interceptions and 18 touchdowns in his 49er career. Smith has thrown 31 interceptions and 19 touchdowns.

Smith was the golden boy, soaking up a #1 pick and nearly $50 million dollars. A lot of money and jobs are riding on Smith's success but Singletary is gonna run a ball control offense, heavy on the running and low on the turnovers and Hill is the guy to lead the team.
